The company uses copper indium gallium diselenide to produce CIGS cells, which achieve up to 24.9% efficiency in laboratory and production cells of up to 17 percent average efficiency. This type of solar cell is ideal for portable power, BIPV, Military and aeronautics.  The power output and is 1.5 to 2X greater in performance than comparable thin film flexible solar materials.

GSHK Solar opened in 1994 in China in partnership with the Chinese government.  In 2008 GSHK finished another phase of development as it expanded its CIGS production to a new 100 MW facility in Mudu, China. The company expects to produce 100 megawatts of the films at the plant in 2008 before ramping up to 250 megawatts of capacity in 2012 and 500 megawatts by 2014 with its new manufacturing plant in Brazil and Turkey. This makes GSHK Solar a key player in the foundation of CIGS Solar and one of the largest full-scale manufacturer of CIGS thin-film photovoltaic in the world.
